What are the signs that you need to replace your vehicles shocks or struts?
If you are wondering whether your vehicle needs to have the shocks or struts replaced, keep a look out for the following signs.
The most obvious sign of a problem with your shocks or struts is that your car is giving you a much more uncomfortable ride. You will feel bumps more and the ride will feel rough. If you feel like you are about to lose control of your car when you drive over a bump or pothole, it is likely your shocks or struts need to be checked out.
Another sign of a shock or strut problem is difficulty steering. Your steering wheel may feel stiff and hard to turn. It may feel like your car is swaying or leaning when you are turning.
Struts are a structural part of your vehicle. Faulty struts can result in other problems not just suspension issues. You may notice that your car feels unstable and nose dives when you brake.
You may notice visible wear and tear on the struts or shocks. The most common visual clue that your shocks or struts may need to be replaced is a fluid leak.
When your suspension or wheel alignment is off, your tires will experience uneven tread wear. Suspension damage can cause scalloped dips (cups) to develop around the edge of the tread. This problem can be very dangerous. If you notice any such signs on your tires, come in and see us and one of our technicians will check it right away.
Vehicles need regular replacement of shocks or struts. Every 80,000 kms or so, depending on your car’s make and model. Have one of our technicians make a routine check of your vehicle’s shocks or struts every 80,000 kms, or however often your vehicle manufacture recommends it.
